This is our chance to get to know someone better who is working in the B.C. craft beer industry.
1. Who are you?
I'm @dennisthefoodie (he/him/Chinese-Canadian), food & beer blogger since 2014, active on food forums since 2004. I live and work in Vancouver as a graphic designer.
2. What do you do?
I've been @superfluxbeer's in-house photographer since 2017, but an avid craft beer drinker since early days of @alibiroomvancouver & @camravancouver cask festivals. I used to write about new breweries & beers but it's just too hard to keep up! 3. What is your biggest pet peeve about the industry?
The entitled whininess of the IG community in general. (I've been guilty of this behaviour too, sorry!) Tasting room staff assuming I know nothing about beer! And lack of Asians in tasting rooms, but this is slowly changing. Funny that the majority of the local food IG scene is Asian female but the beer scene is mostly white male. Notable exceptions: @dangerdan_yvr, @blackvogue, @bruceandbeer, @beermecanada, etc. Last peeve is that it's still hard to get great beer in most restaurants. If they do have something good it might be stale, or the lines aren't clean, or the glassware is dirty. Thankfully, despite the challenges of running a "kitchen" under a lounge license, breweries are stepping up their game. Four Winds, Luppolo, 33 Acres do worthy food, and many other breweries host great food trucks. IMHO Superflux is doing some rather special food too ;)
4. What do you love most about working in the industry?
The friends I've made and the people I've met. Beer is the great connector, relaxant, and social lubricator. Now everybody take that vaccine so we can get back to drinking & eating in "outside clothes".
5. What is your favourite beer right now?
Happyness and Colour & Shape :) Also: @steelandoak Simple Things. @slowhandbeer Galaxy Pilsner. Anything @boomboxbrewing. @containerbrewing All Season Nitro Stout. Gueuze Tilquin. Duvel. I don't chase whales. Beer is for everybody. I also love natural wine & cider.
