Beer Reconnaissance: End of Summer Selections
Dan is on a mission to try as many local beers as possible, one single can at a time...
In the mood for something...
"Simple and satisfying, but thoughtful and nuanced"
Beer: This Pilsner is a Lager
Brewery: Another Beer Company
Style: Czech Pilsner, 5% ABV
Comment: Dear beer aficionados: it's 12 Plato, lagered 49 days, brewed with Raven Floor Malted Pilsner, Melanoidin & Chit malts; hopped with Czech Saaz. No-nonsense person? It's an all-season beer you can have on it's own as a nightcap, pair with pub grub, or a weekday dinner, since it's equal parts flavorful and drinkable.
"Unapologetically hoppy, but tastefully done"
Beer: She Sells Sea Shells
Brewery: Electric Bicycle Brewing
Style: West Coast IPA, 6.9% ABV
Comment: You get big aromas of a 'walk in the woods', some subtle fruity/citrus taste and aroma, malt backing, bitterness, and a crisp finish. A 2013-2014 beer done right, if you're feeling nostalgic of Vancouver's initial craft beer boom, and want to take a break from drinking hazies.
"Advanced, but approachable, and ideal for a virtual bottle share"
Beer: One Day, Eventually, Things Will Bee Okay
Brewery: Temporal Artisan Ales
Style: Unblended Barrel Aged Mixed Fermentation Ale with Honey, 7.5% ABV
Comment: It's bubbly, has considerable acidity, but a one-of-a-kind taste/aroma from the unpasteurized Fraser Valley clover honey interacting with the mixed sour/yeast culture. It finishes quite dry and smooth to hide the alcohol. *Partial proceeds donated to the Vancouver Food & Beverage Community, as well as Hogan's Alley
"Fun and delicious, but has premium ingredients"
Beer: Class Act
Brewery: Ile Sauvage, Kwantlen Polytechnic University Brewing Program, Brewhall, and BC Beer Awards
Style: Boysenberry Dry Hopped Sour, 5.5% ABV
Comment: Quite jammy, the tartness is just right, not sickly sweet, and the beer finishes light on the palate. Not to mention, it uses a fairly new hop variety called Amarillo -"Lemon Candy" (AKA German Amarillo), and an exclusive hop blend named HS-1228'. So the ingredients alone are worth the price of admission!
