Beer Reconnaissance: International Women's Day B.C. Releases

Dan is on a mission to try as many local beers as possible, one single can at a time...

Let's face it, the first few months of 2021 have been tense and precarious (3rd wave pandemic, PHO travel restrictions, vaccine rollout, and ongoing systemic racialized violence are a few things which jump to mind).

Despite these challenging times, we wanted to take a moment to reflect with beer in hand, and not overlook the glimmers of positivity. One such glimmer? In March, members across the B.C. craft beer industry participated in International Women's Day & Pink Boots brews as a way to express their commitment towards making a more equitable and inclusive craft beer industry.

This is not meant to be a definitive list, but is based on what the contributor was able to find locally at breweries and liquor retail stores without violating PHO Covid-19 restrictions...

Slackwater Brewing: "Making Waves" Pineapple Rye Saison

An annual Pink Boots Canada "collabrewation" brew that does not disappoint. The natural acidity and fruitiness of pineapple keeps the beer from being too expressive in terms of yeast character, yet the base beer style itself remains the foundation of the beer. Partial proceeds will be donated to Pink Boots Society.

Steel & Oak Brewing Company: "Teulu" Passionfruit Orange Guava IPA (Pink Boots Society Hop Blend of Cashmere, Ahtanum®, Citra®, Loral® & Sabro®)

Big hit of the POG fruit combo upfront, but there’s a subtle hop backing on the finish. In true S&O fashion, proceeds from each 4 pack went towards the Spirit of the Children Society, who empower and strengthen Indigenous families by providing support and resources in New Westminster, Burnaby, and the Tri-cities.

Strange Fellows Brewing: "Sororitas" Hazy Pale Ale (featuring the Pink Boots Society Hop Blend of Cashmere, Ahtanum®, Citra®, Loral® & Sabro®)

It’s drinkable without sacrificing that hoppy juicy character. This is volume 2 of the brewery’s helping hands series, that raised $1818 for WISH Drop-in Society to improve the health, safety, and wellbeing of women involved in Vancouver’s street-based sex trade.

Container Brewing Ltd: "We Gruit Together" Gruit (with yarrow, hyssop, lemongrass, & rosemary)

This thoughtfully designed brew involved the brilliant minds of Natalia @nat_andrzejczak, Hanna @hannahops, and Katie @definelush. It’s got farmhouse ale and saison vibes, but the gentle acidity really balances out the whole brew.
